Brandon's Story
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a rapidly-worsening condition that cruelly strips away sufferers’ muscle function. It’s a disease that has afflicted Diana Award Holder Brandon Fick, who has now lost so much motor function that he needs a wheelchair to get around and a helper in lessons to write for him.
Despite this, Brandon is a positive and cheerful student in a mainstream school and he helps his form tutor to look after the needs of younger pupils. He is an ambassador the school’s Enhanced Resource Base Council, where he promotes the views of his peers, and he is highly respected by them. He is also very busy out of school hours and is a member of a remote control racing club and has tried outward bound activities such as zip wiring.
Brandon was presented with the Diana Award in front of over 1,000 people at a whole-school presentation evening, and he was ecstatic. The Award has also given him greater confidence in himself and he now looks forward to greater successes in the future.
